Clutch Master Cylinder
The component of the clutch that converts the pressure of the driver's foot pressing the pedal into hydraulic pressure is called the master cylinder. More specifically, when the clutch pedal is pushed it moves the master cylinder inward, creating hydraulic pressure. This pressure then travels to the slave cylinder and eventually to the pressure plate where the clutch is disengaged. The most common issue with clutch master cylinders is leaks. The master cylinder is comprised of an aluminum housing, a piston, and several seals—if there is a leak in any of those seals, fluid will drain out and air will come into the aluminum housing. Introducing air into the system will make it more difficult to generate enough hydraulic pressure.
Pressure Plate
A clutch is made up of three main components—the pressure plate, flywheel, and clutch disc. These elements work together to transfer power from the engine to the transmission while also allowing the engine to continue running when the wheels are stopped. The first component is the flywheel—a large metal disc that is bolted to the crankshaft of the engine. Attached to the flywheel is the pressure plate, which is essentially a spring-loaded clamp with a sheet metal cover. The clutch disc is a steel plate covered with a frictional material that fits between the flywheel and the pressure plate. When the clutch is engaged, the pressure plate squeezes the disc against the flywheel, effectively transferring power from the engine to the transmission.
